INFORMATION

WHY

In January of 2005 an open meeting was held to discuss ways to breathe new life into Helping Hands. Helping Hands is an organization started by Carol Hurley seven years ago after she was diagnosed with cancer and had experienced first hand the many helping hands of her friends and neighbors.

Helping Hands is an ever expanding circle of Barnard neighbors who share their time and skills with others in our community. To keep this circle of individuals growing, we need to work with each other, sharing our talents and gifts and identifying those in need. The vision for this organization is to help people in physical, financial or emotional need.

In the future, it is our goal to apply for nonprofit status in order to qualify for grants to fund larger projects. As we continue to develop this organization, we welcome your ideas and participation at our meetings. Please know your ideas are important. Call us anytime.

Helping Hands seeks to match the skills of this community with its needs. Do you need a ride? Are you sick and need groceries, mail or a prescription picked up or a meal delivered? Do you know someone who lives alone and might like a visit? Could you help to rake your neighbor's leaves or shovel their walk? Could you volunteer time to stack a neighbor's firewood, help paint their house or fix a sagging screen door for someone who cannot do it themselves? These are only a few of the services we might provide. The possibilities for this organization are as varied as the needs found and the skills available.

Perhaps you need a Helping Hand. Would you then be willing to offer something in return? Could you teach someone to knit, send a birthday card, call someone who is sick or do something else to complete this circle of sharing? We are all able to contribute something; sometimes we need to remind ourselves of our own special qualities.

Margot Harcher has agreed to be our telephone contact. 802-234-5320 We are seeking a back-up to assist Margot and be available when she is not. Together they will gather information and help coordinate our services. They will have a list of all volunteers and with the help of others attempt to match neighbor to neighbor.
